    Description

    This is one pound of bituminous coal from the SUFCO (Southern Utah Fuel Co.) mine located approximately 20 miles northeast of Salina, Utah, on the Wasatch plateau. Found in the Blackhawk formation of the Cretaceous age. This mine has been in production since 1941 producing a low-sulfur, low-ash coal, ideal as steam coal. The mine is a room-and-pillar mine and more recently as a high-performance longwall operation. The seam averages 4.1 meters and is generally flat-lying, having an average overburden of 335 meters. The coal quality averages - 10% moisture, 8.5% ash, 0.35% sulfur, with a heating value of 26.5 MJ/Kg.
