Description

Part of an enormous stromatoporoid sponge fossil from the mid to late Petoskey Limestone Formation bioherm in Petoskey, Michigan, USA. The whole strom was probably spherical in shape, but most of it was buried in the cliff. The genus should be Stromatopora. 380 million years ago it was part of a thriving stromatoporoid reef community, with corals, brachiopods, bivalves, trilobites, cephalopods, gastropods, conodonts and possibly a few others. It's quite large and heavy, 6.33lbs/2.86kg and 10in/25.5cm across. Make sure you have adequate shelf space and strength.
