These rocks are filled with layers upon layers of fossils from the Miocene epoch. The Miocene is the first geological epoch of the Neogene Period from about ~15 million years ago!  The lagerstätte is a sedimentary deposit that exhibits extraordinary fossils with exceptional preservation—sometimes including preserved soft tissues.
You could find whole plants, leaves, seeds, insects, and who knows what else in a magnificent, preserved state!

The fossil beds were laid down in a lake roughly 15-million-years ago, when a drainage basin was dammed by the flood basalts of the Columbia River Plateau. Their preservation is exquisite; fresh leaves are unfossilized, and sometimes retain their fall colors before rapidly oxidizing in air. It has been reported that scientists have managed to isolate small amounts of ancient DNA from fossil leaves from this site!!
